One curiosity from yesterday's episode. An edit of the Million Dollar Win cue was being used as a commercial bumper. The optimist in me wonders if they created a new MDW cue, since I was never particularly taken by the current one. Perhaps something a little more fanfare, sort of a hybrid between the current one and the classic one. Hey millionairefan1, want a project? I didn't get to see it!!! I always thought the current one was lacking.

Ratings-wise, it's not looking too good. Millionaire scored a 1.2, the lowest number yet. The last week of Terry re-runs had a 1.6, the last season with Meredith mostly remained above the 2.0 mark, Cedric slightly below it.
Obviously, the timeslot changes did huge damage to the show. It's a pity Chris isn't really given a fighting chance. As good as he is, I doubt people in, say, Philadelphia will get up at 1:05am to watch him.

Yeah, I don't think Chris or the format can be blamed for the ratings decline. It seems like the show has been relegated to death slots (or no slots) in a lot of major markets.

I don't want to blame the low ratings for the decision to pull the show from some markets but I think any ABC affiliate carrying Millionaire started to carry some additional shows and bumped Millionaire for those. Like here in New York, WABC started to carry Chrissy Teigan's new afternoon talk show.

Like here in New York, WABC started to carry Chrissy Teigan's new afternoon talk show. The decision whether to renew a show and which timeslot to choose roughly boils down to three factors: - the popularity (ratings) of the show (in the desired demographic) in relation to its direct competition and other shows available to the network. - the margin between the production costs and the show's revenue. Low production costs may make a show with bad ratings attractive for renewal. This point is probably Millionaire's biggest problem. - lastly, a good critical reception may have some influence on the decision, too. This one doesn't really matter much in the case of Millionaire, but low-rated shows like 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation wouldn't have lasted so long, had they not earned dozens of prizes. Other things factor in as well, of course. Millionaire as an international brand needs to stay relevant in important markets. My guess would be that that's the main reason Celador agreed to lowering Millionaire's license fees, thus giving ABC more reason to renew it. The situation isn't looking too good at the moment, but the season just started. And Celador won't give up on US Millionaire even if ABC canceled it, that's pretty sure. If I'm going to be realistic and comprehensive, as I so much like to be, I might as well end my lecture on a realistically positive note.

Here in Phoenix, Family Feud and Millionaire swapped time slots, with Feud preceding Millionaire now. That certainly threw me off at first. Millionaire now airs at 8:00pm here.

Wait didn't Celador sue Disney/ABC over issues regarding those fees? (Or was it royalty payments?) I'm also still lost as to who is exactly in charge of US Millionaire at this point as things got cloudy. I know Sony is one keyholder, ABC/Disney are another, and Celador of course "rules" all... So how does Endermol and others factor into this? (And I may end up making a thread asking about all this instead.)

It was royalties Celador sued Disney for, not license fees, you're right. As I understand it, and it is confusing as hell, it works like this:
- Celador gets royalties for the format. Or GOT, because the rights to the Shuffle format lie with ABC. I'm not quite sure what the situation with the current hybrid format is like. - 2waytraffic, a subsidiary of Sony, holds the license to the show. - Valleycrest Productions produces Millionaire and is owned by Disney-ABC. Endemol, which produces the show in other countries (Germany, formerly the UK), has nothing to do with the US version.
To make it a little easier, you could compare Millionaire to a book. Celador wrote it, 2waytraffic has the rights to it, and Valleycrest Productions prints it in the US.

I'm guessing that the game being 14 questions instead of 15 is enough to make it original.

Looks like at least 2 contestants have won $250,000 in Season 14 already? Does anyone have episode links? The only links I can find are to the first two episodes of the season.

Right now it looks to be just the first one. I know there is someone who is planning on uploading the others soon as they can.
