So yesterday, another special edition of Millionaire was broadcast in Germany. I (and I'm guessing some of you, too) have come to cringe whenever I hear the words "Millionaire" and "special edition" in one sentence. The Germans, however, do a pretty good job at these, because they change the rules of the game but still let civilians play. I've never quite seen the appeal of (more or less) famous people playing the game.
Anyway, to the rules:
Anyway, to the rules:
- 8 contestants play Fastest Finger to get into the hotseat. Nothing special about that.
- The way the game is played is no different either. The contestant may choose between 3 or 4 lifelines, just like in regular episodes.
- The first twist is that only the contestant who answers the most questions right gets all the money won that night. Everybody else leaves with nothing. Should the contestant give an incorrect answer, they drop down to the last safe haven. One woman answered question 11 incorrectly and chose the Risk version, so she dropped down to 5 correct answers.
- The way the jackpot is determined is different too. Instead of just adding the money value of the last correctly answered question, all the money values from each question are added up (think Shuffle Round 1). So, answering the first two questions (worth €50 and €100) adds €150 to the jackpot. If a contestant gives a wrong answer, the money they have added to the jackpot is not taken out again.
- Should two contestants walk away at the same level, and no other contestant surpasses them, a tiebreaker is played. Two buzzers are set up where the hotseat would be. The host reads out typical Millionaire questions (second tier difficulty) with 4 answers, and who buzzes in first after the question has been read out, has 5 seconds to give an answer. If the answer is correct, they get a point, if it is incorrect or they time out, their opponent gets a point. Whoever scores 3 points first wins it all.
To demonstrate the rules, here is a recap of yesterday's episode:
- The first contestant answered 10 questions right, but missed the €32,000 question. Thus she dropped down to 5 correct answers, but added €32,150 to the jackpot
- The second contestant answered 14 questions correctly and walked away, thus taking the driver's seat and adding €753,150 to the jackpot (total: €785,300)
- The third contestant also gave 14 correct answers and walked away, bringing the jackpot to a total of €1,538,450
- To determine the final winner of that amount, they played the tiebreaker, which was as close as can be with a 3 to 2 point win.
I find this version interesting, because it doesn't radically change gameplay, but it forces the contestants to keep playing. I'm not a gigantic fan of the buzzer round, because speed competition games aren't my cup of tea, but the rest is pretty exciting stuff. Provided the players aren't all complete dum-dums who barely get beyond question 5, of course.
