I know that in USA producers have a final word in deciding on who goes on the show. In my opinion it's absolutely unjust. Some of the most qualified/smartest people never get a chance to shine & take advantage of their knowledge because they either don't look good, don't sound good or give a 'wrong look' at a producer. Does anyone share my pain? Or maybe in other countries it is different from that?
" Applicants must complete a written test within the specified time limitations and may take the test only once per audition day. Applicants who do not receive a passing score (to be determined in the Producer’s sole discretion) will be eliminated from the audition. Applicants who do receive a passing score will continue with an audition interview. The Producer, in its sole discretion, will determine which Applicants have passed the audition interview."millionairetv.dadt.com/official-rules/

When you had to make a 1-900, 1-800 phone call to play a Fastest Finger First but that STILL led to an interview to get on the show. It was never guaranteed that just because you passed the phone call mini-game, you'd be heading to Essex/New York to attend a taping. You STILL had to have a second test and an audition interview with the producer before you got a chance to sit in the ring of fire. The interviews always play a part of the game... hell any game show in the states used them... Every American game show (even The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune) used them. It's not so much about giving everyone a chance, it's about putting on an entertaining product. Sure some people may think that if any Joe from the streets can get picked up and come into a studio and answer 14/15 questions for an "easy" million is entertaining... but the people running the show think otherwise. Heck... even the UK version did some form of an interview...

I remember an interview where a producer from the UK version talked about the contestants. Apparently, they started having interviews around the time the rave format was introduced. "Too many older white guys in the Hotseat" was the reason, if I remember correctly. On the German version, potential contestants are interviewed via Skype and asked to tell an exciting (or ridiculous) story from their life. During the "Meet the contestants"-shtick each contestant is introduced with a short line, e.g. "John Doe from Hicksville. He has worn Mick Jagger's underpants," or "Jane Doe from Wherever. With the million, she wants to buy her dog a weave."
That's television (and by extension society) for you. It's superficial. You have to make yourself interesting. There's no rule against inventing stuff, though.

This conversation has come up on other boats I frequent. The bottom line is that it's their show, and they will cast who they think will create the best product. Fairness has nothing to do with it, and it never has. Not on any game show ever. Being on a game show is not a civil right.
