I don't recall them giving the AOL audience that long to vote. What's the point in going to a commercial break when you can probably generate more results than an average studio audience in about 20-30 seconds?

I recall that the UK version did a similar thing called Ask the Nation, execpt it was text message based and I read that they would take a break as they counted the votes. I was unaware of what they did with the AOL vote.

I don't know how quickly the results were tallied in the studio, but at home you only had a very brief window to vote in AIM after the question was asked.

I think it took two minutes from the time Meredith said "And lock in your votes now..." and after that point, the votes were tallied and were called back. It's not like they said "Okay, we're going to intermission..." No we just sat in the studio and waited slightly longer. Meredith quipped "Oh I know you guys are done, but we're just waiting on the AOL results."

Probably not since the episodes are usually taped.

Probably not since the episodes are usually taped. But the episodes were taped when they did it in 2004. It works better that way since the audience doesn't know the question beforehand and therefore has no chance of looking it up when asked.

In that case, how would they be notified if a question was being asked?

In that case, how would they be notified if a question was being asked? They wouldn't need to be notified beforehand. All they need is a text that feeds them the question and possible answers. They probably only need 20 to 30 seconds to text the letter that corresponds to their answer.

While the implementation of online voting for ATA seemed interesting, I don't think they'll ever bring it back. As kplewisvox mentioned, people can potentially spam the polls and screw the contestant over big time.
And because Millionaire is all about integrity with their lifelines, and technology being so much faster than before, people can look up the answer very quickly with a search engine, even with a very small window of time; results pop up instantaneously, most of the time. That's something the producers don't want, using the internet to look up the answer.
