Jeremy Clarkson to host Millionaire!

Jeremy Clarkson as a host is amazing. Loved his banter tonight. Too bad the contestants were a bit of a dud. I don't think the questions were difficult enough to justify a payout of just £10,000.

I largely agree with everyone else. Jeremy is a good host, no doubt. His pace is great, thank god. The graphics make me think they spent all their money on the set, though. That opening sequence is beyond lazy and I don't get why the font for the money tree isn't copperplate when it was for the Sun promo. They might have changed it later, though.

The first episode isn't representative for many reasons, but I expected much worse. The first watchable episode of UK Millionaire in years.

The episode has just finished so here's some fresh comments on the go:

(1) Clarkson as a host - very decent, except I'm not hugely fond of the idea of mocking contestants for their progress. I do enjoy his humour during the game though.
(2) The set actually looks really good, except I feel it's too dark right off the bat. It's a bit too dependent on the LEDs rather than classically employing moving heads. Huge kudos for the floor, though. I was not at all sure about how it would work but they made it good.
(3) Classic soundtrack is welcome, but not happy about some of the *basic* mistakes made (especially wrong Lx cues). Also re-using sound effects for other purposes (lifeline pings being a major example here) makes very little sense. Time's up cue missing.
(4) Opening titles are nice but a little basic. I am, however, keen on the background, which looks like a refreshed version of the classic 1998 one.
(5) Unfortunately, most of the other graphics are appalling. The question frame is crap. The money tree looks like somebody forgot to install Copperplate so it reverted back to Arial. The spacing is too small. The lifelines are okay. The background is the same one as in all European rave versions - I like it, but personally wished they used the one from credits/bumpers. "Who was fastest" is also horrible. No question winnings lozenge, no total prize money lozenge. The PAF clock from 2010-14 doesn't fit in.
(6) The editing is terrible. Clear cuts in the question music can be heard. The pacing is horrible. The first 5 drag on way too much. Absolutely awful.
(7) Finally, questions and contestants. The first guy had a really tough set right off the bat. By the time we got to the third contestant, the producers must have noticed the questions were too tough and lowered the difficulty. Still didn't help with getting people to higher questions. Somewhat glad the casting chose more risk-loving people; however I got particularly annoyed at the very last question, which was actually objectively quite easy.

Overall, I rate the first episode at 4/10. Truly hoping for improvement - fast.
