Hey Millionaire( )fans, I’m from the Czech Republic and I’ve pretty much grown up on watching Czech Millionaire ("Chcete být milionářem?" actually translates as "Do you want to be millionaire?"), despite it airing only between 2000 and 2005. That’s because it was so popular at the beginning that Nova (the TV channel) has been airing it pretty much ever since on their sub-channel for legacy shows. They’ve made a very unsuccessful revival in 2016 but more on that later. This place seems to be right to share this thought I’ve always wanted to with someone who 1) is not from the Czech Republic, 2) cares at least the smallest little bit. When I was watching Millionaire as a kid, I was completely isolated from the fact that Millionaire existed outside the Czech Republic (not to mention its British origins). The reason why I’m writing this "Final answer philosophy" however is that Czech Millionaire had one significant difference in its gameplay – it was not the player locking in the answers but the host, no "final answer" phrase was therefore needed. This was in combination with the host’s (Vladimír Čech) incredible charm, meaning that more time was spent at individual questions. You would simply have to convince him to lock in the answer. On one hand this meant Nova could save money, on the other hand the game felt much more tense and had a much more fun feel to it. Millionaire therefore became incredibly popular and most (literally!) inhabitants would watch it when it was airing during its popularity peak. Nova however became greedier and greedier, and they swapped the host for another one, destroying our version’s unique feel, and that lead to its slow but steady demise. They actually “misused” this during the game’s brief revival in 2016 – again, more on that later. This is what shocked me when I watched foreign Millionaire for the first time. It was actually the John Carpenter video from U.S. Millionaire, and I felt like "Why didn’t the host hold the answer for a moment? That ruins everything!"... Honestly, that’s why I didn’t really enjoy Regis Philbin as a host. He was a good man and watching Millionaire hosted by him is still great, but it simply lacks the tension. Meredith Viera would at least hold the answer locked in for a second, giving it at least a bit of my desired gameplay tension, but Regis would simply confirm it immediately. The other thing is that no one’s ever won the jackpot here, not even the 14th question, only two people answered the 13th question correctly, but that’s more about Nova being greedy and making the questions way too difficult (syndicated U.S. Millionaire?) than about the altered gameplay itself. In 2016, shortly after Vladimír Čech died, Nova announced a new series of Millionaire that would be hosted by Marek Vašut. This was however very short-lived as he would waffle about very boring things and hold even the first few questions for very long, meaning it would always take more than five minutes to get through the first five questions, despite the contestants knowing all the answers immediately. A lot of people – including me – were looking forward to this new series, but it was simply unwatchable. To give you a sense of scale, the fourth episode ran for 75 minutes and only two contestants got to sit in the hot seat, each only getting up to the 9th question, not even reaching the second safety net. If you were interested, it’s very well explained in comprehensive detail here: chcetebytmilionarem-4fan-cz.translate.goog/870?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=cs&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en#more-870http://So, after all that, what do you think about this altered gameplay? It makes the game much more fun in my opinion (and you at least avoid the things like “C, final answer *music* Sorry, I meant D!!!”) but it shouldn’t be “misused”. If you got this far, thank you for your precious time you spent by reading this paper… Greetings from The Heart of Europe, Daniel

Hi to you Daniel When I saw the title of your thread, it challenged me a bit so I said to myself, I'm interested in knowing things that I probably didn't know. I admit that I completely agree on the case of Regis Philbin and on the way he "keeps" the answer for later revealing it, I don't like his way of animating at all. I'm not just targeting Regis, I'm targeting the American version as a whole (so it could also be Meredith Vieira). The American version is not part of the authentic WWTBAM world. The European versions have more things to entertain us, to think about and to give us emotion, than that of the U.S version. I'll take the example of the French version with the famous Jean-Pierre Foucault, who has the art of putting the contestant in tension and he can do it at any time, from the first to the last question. I also like Chris Tarrant who has a humorous side (without surely wanting it) but who has the gift of disorienting or changing a contestant's life. For your information, the best in your version was Vladimír Čech, he was a good one, I still don't understand why Nova decided to change him. Now to tell you, I find that there are "treasures" in the European, South American, Asian (except Japan) black graphics versions that can be found and seen than that of the American and Japanese version . If you have any questions or anything, you can ask me, I'm open to discussion

It's your personal opinion that I respect. For me Foucault, Čech, Nikodým, Dibrov, Papadopoulos and other former European animators from the "black graphics" era are for me on equal footing because they bring together the elements of the game, which is what I mentioned earlier time. Currently I think it's complicated in Europe to return certain elements that have unfortunately been forgotten over time. Nothing to do with the return of the French version in 2019 with Combal's clown who ended up burying "Qui veut gagner des millions ?" in June of the same year so much that he was not at all gifted with suspense, attention and even not having a little bit of humor. Unfortunately, the format can also change the animation style. The rave format destabilized the style of the hosts (whether old or new), it just didn't help. PS: even if I don't speak and I don't understand Czechoslovakian, I will say about Vladimír Čech that he looks like a scholar when he talks to the camera and in front of the contestants before the questions and I like that. As I would say that Jean-Pierre Foucault has an air of padre so much that his stature and his voice that he has improved consider that :-)

I simply loved how Čech would say things like "So you really do know?", "You want to walk already? But there's all these millions to be won!" etc. Now I realise the phrase "last word" ("final answer" doesn't translate very well but that's also obvious from the French version) had been used a few times but it still would not have committed you to anything. It was just a phrase Čech would sometimes use to confirm the decision with the player but it was still him making things happen. I feel like the entire problem is that TV stations wanted to improvise and make the game different. That however made it less popular and sadly, Millionaire is nowadays virtually extinct. (I'm not entirely sure what happened to U.S. Millionaire with Jimmy Kemmel, what went wrong?) When I think about Rave graphics, they are somewhat cool, I just can't stand the music, especially the Q1-Q5 cue. They used it in our 2016 revival, another reason for a thumbs down from me. This might not be the most popular opinion but I don't mind the U.S. Shuffle format. I actually liked the gameplay itself and although the music was a bit weird, it's still cool. What's sad though is that both the host and the player stand the entire time. Getting rid of the hot seat(s), which is a integral part of "Miliionaire symbolism", makes it much worse in my opinion. PS: Czechoslovakia has been gone for decades and there's never been anything like Czechoslovakian language

I'm going to be honest, but I personally think when Millionaire had a revamp to rave graphics in the late 00's and early 10's, whether people liked it or not, was a time where it peaked again. In my view, there has been peaks and down points in many eras of "Millionaire". And on this occasion, we're seeing a new peak of "Millionaire" with new graphics and a new method of game play that has expanded to Guatemala, Costa Rica, South Africa (in Afrikaans), Greece, Croatia, Nigeria (to name a few).
I think holding the black graphics as the top standard is rather futile, but rather that it all comes down to how the host is presented and how the contestants play the game. We've seen many countries renewing their shows for another series due to the current success of "Millionaire" at their current form because it still has the charm, but executed differently and well.
For the American version, they were up against other shows on the network that didn't do too well, and sports matches that mostly won or at least were on top of the viewership lists, that would no doubt put them at odds against their favour. Plus, Jimmy Kimmel wasn't the best choice, he just didn't have that excitement, but also partly due to the unfortunate situation of Covid-19.
As for the hosting presentations, Americans have a different way of presenting shows, like many places around the world. Japan tends to hold the tension too long, whilst America doesn't hold it for that much.
I look forward to how you feel about my points

PS: Czechoslovakia has been gone for decades and there's never been anything like Czechoslovakian language To answer your question before, Martin Nikodým is the Slovak host, Dmitry Dibrov is the Russian host and Spiros Papadopoulos is the Greek host (all of them are from the 2000s era). In fact, we French people tend to do differently from other countries (but really differently), that is to say for the magic phrase for example that we replace with a kind of expression, the name of the program that we keep for a long time which is a kind of epinal, or else the completely blue board which makes it even more spacious. And even see the slightly adjusted graphics (whether it's the blacks or the one from uk 2010 that we had them before them haha) The problem with the rave format is not so much the graphics or the verdana which is used all the time and which replaces the two typefaces of the time. No, for me, it's the music that I call "nightclub" and the intro that make me say that it looks like it's part of the same box of TV games in baseness when no, this game is different from the others. The Shuffle format, frankly it's an impossible massacre, certainly it lasted 9 years but even so, this format is a register of games belonging to the same box of banal TV games like Lingo or Jeopardy. I'm going to be honest, but I personally think when Millionaire had a revamp to rave graphics in the late 00's and early 10's, whether people liked it or not, was a time where it peaked again. I look forward to how you feel about my points Regarding the host of the American version, I had already given my point of view in another thread. There are certainly versions that started with the rave format, I take the example of Sri Lanka, it lasted 11 years. Except that after the Sri Lankan production moved on to old music (which I categorize from basic to black graphics). So the production must have understood that it no longer made sense to have Covalo's music all the time. I can also talk about the Slovenian version which made their comeback in 2019 with Covalo's music and as the production saw that it didn't fit too much with the game's DNA, well they put back the Strachan music and even the intro music by putting the tunnel version which is also better (and then also change host) To come to the graphics, I made a small statistics myself and imagine that the rave graphics lasted longer than that of the black graphics (that is to say 13 years for the black and 16 years for the rave) and I will even add 2019 graphics as they are similar in texture and text font to raves. For my part I still find that the American influence influences Japan, so for my part they are a little too much haha.

For me Olga graphics still are the best! Well the problem with the Japan version is (I would say) that the host doesn't tend to say anything during the locked-in period. It's just silence. This is what Čech and actually Foucault are great at...

Ah okay, good to know the others. You know what, comparing the Rave music to a nightclub is actually pretty apt. They basically just took the original cues and added some nonsensual... whatever it was to the background and it feels really grim and actually quite hyperactive... The questions in the Shuffle format were way too difficult, that's the other thing. I just liked the idea... Do we even know what went wrong with U.S. Millionaire hosted by Jimmy Kemmel?

Concerning the Kimmel case, see that with the purists of the American version, for my part I don't see a guy from the late show, to animate a show like that. It's the equivalent of Combal's plouc (the replacement for Foucault in the French version)

He was a great host in all other ways though.

Reminds me of the description of the Rave era music on UKGameshows.com ("The theme music was seemingly remixed for a nightclub..."). I think it still worked though, especially with the later graphics of Turkey, Poland and the Netherlands. (My favourite out of the Rave graphics is probably Poland; it just looked more polished than its predecessors).
