Aaaaaaaaaaaand I'm calling time on that, folks. So I'm sure some of you are confused as to why only one of these scores is correct; doesn't a team always score one point at a time? Well, bear with me here because the ensuing explanation is about to get hectic: in the NFL, a team's score can increase by the following increments:

7 points for a touchdown + point-after kick
3 points for a field goal kick
8 points for a touchdown + 2-point conversion
6 points for a touchdown, no conversion
2 points for a safety -- when the offense is tackled in its own end zone.

If a safety is scored on a conversion attempt, the scoring team earns 1 point. This scenario has occurred twice in the history of college football -- by the offense, which ultimately results in a 7th point. This is the only scenario in the NFL rulebook that enables the defense to chip one point off the touchdown that was just scored by the offense, and it goes as follows:

In the midst of a scoreless game, the offense has just scored a touchdown. They go for the 2-point conversion, but get intercepted by the defense, who returns it almost all the way to the other end zone, but for whatever reason they fumble the ball and it's recovered by the offense, who gets tackled in their own end zone. Since the ensuing chaos was from a 2-point conversion attempt, the defense gets one point for forcing the safety -- 98 yards in the wrong direction, quite stupidly.
