Long story short, I got tired of using Flash and I was frustrated with its lack of true 3D engine, lack of third party codec support, sub-par text rendering engine, among other things. Introducing Ventuz, which is basically an advanced production graphics system. It supports 3D lighting, I believe it can use 3D models from tools like Maya, it can use videos from after effects as objects, and it has a beautiful text rendering engine. It also supports live and non-live video feeds. Prior to screen capping this, I had my webcam in the background and the overlay was below me. Later on I changed it to a screen cap of a part of Millionaire when Regis was talking with a contestant. After some work, here's what my new engine looks like. (it's watermarked unfortunately because I'm using an educational edition.) I think it looks pretty good. By the way, Ventuz is what the real show uses for all on-screen graphics (both the TV feed overlay and in-studio graphics).

Yeah, it's a little challenging to get things to work right but they look 100 times more polished in this than they ever did in Flash.

I love it...sadly that you gave up on Flash though. I really need a great flash programmer in AS 2 (better yet in AS3) to help us expand and speed up the process for our simulations at Themagical.nl I love the graphics and it would be cool if you really auditioned to be on the show or visit the show to see a taping. I saw my first taping this August 19th and it was really awesome!!

Are the questions stored in a database-backend as they were in Flash?

Yes, the backend all remained the same. The great thing about using a socket server as the game controller is that, you can effectively build clients in whatever technology you feel like (Flash, Ventuz, Java, probably even PowerPoint through use of VB Macros) and it'll all work just fine as long as your clients properly understand my custom protocol (which is outrageously simplistic and hacky)

Not to sound pushy or anything, but how long do you expect this project to take?

I thought Flash was easier to use and could make some great graphics, is Java still better than using flash?

btrent57: It'll take as long as it needs to take. Not to sound rude, but please stop asking me all the time when this will be done. My answer is now permanently: It'll be done when it's done. I am currently balancing a job and a very rigorous university class schedule, so the time I have right now to work on Millionaire is much more limited than it was when I was still in High School. millionairefan28: Java isn't "better" than using Flash, If you use Flash you have all the graphics layer of things done for you, but if you use Java you're going to either need to use a graphics library and do a lot of manual labor that Flash would've taken care of for you, but at the same time you'll have more precision control of what you're doing. This app, however, has nothing to do with Java. Ventuz is like Flash on steroids, and it uses .NET languages (VB, C#) for any scripting that must be done. All I did in this case with C# was write a TCP client to accept and parse commands from my Millionaire game server.
