This is a lie. The audience was being rude to that guy. They were basically saying that "your stupid and you should know the answer". When I went to millionaire they didnt say to screw around with the contestant and they told us not to as well.

Well, in the American version, they don't want you to mess around with the contestants.
Themountainclimber is right, though. In some countries, especially Russia, they are well known for misleading the contestants.
