I don't know if this has been brought up before, but has there ever been an occurrence where a phone-a-friend accidentally or unexpectedly hangs up during the 30-second clock? Like a dropped call? If it did happen before, do you think they would give the contestant another call? Or is their lifeline wasted after that?

I always wondered this myself. I think the fair thing to do if no answers have been given would be to let them either call back or call someone else. Seems to me something weird did happen during a phone a friend one time and the lifeline was essentially wasted, but I can't remember what it was. All I know is I didn't think it was fair. Seems to me it was during the clock format season.

From I recall talking to Ogi Ogas a while back, in addition to various documentaries. A conestant's PAFs were required to be phoned on a land line so no possibility of a call dropping would occur. All PAFs had to keep the lines open from a certain time and were not allowed to make/take any calls during the time the conestant was in the Hot Seat. When the PAF comes on the line, they are not allowed to make small talk with the host, so the show can run smoothly. After their 30 seconds with the contestant has expired, the PAF's voice is mute in studio, and the Associate Producer informs the PAF to standy for the contestant's result.
