Hello there!
I'm surprised there's no post about it yet - I just saw a post about the lack of millionaire winners - and I realized that the probably most recent international millionaire winner has not been covered here. On March 11th, 2013, contestant Sebastian Langrock managed to make his way to the top and win the big €1,000,000 (approx. $1,322,700) prize on German Millionaire.
His final question was Which of these should be familiar with the "20-past-4-formation"?, and before the choices were even read by the host, Günther Jauch, Langrock sat uneasy in his chair, currently in the process of realizing that he knew the correct answer to the question that would bring him €1,000,000. He manages to communicate his rambling thoughts: "I need a waiter", he has to say twice for Günther Jauch to understand. Jauch is confused - the candidate continues: "Please, any of them. A, B, C, D, I need a waiter to appear."
Jauch, clearly intrigued, slowly begins revealing the available choices, while Langrock can not sit anymore, now hectically moving around the hot seat. A) Driving Instructors. The studio is completely silent, everyone waiting for Jauch to continue - he does. B) Karate Champions. Two down, two to go - no waiter so far. The tension can be felt through the screen. C), Jauch continues, Waiters - the crowd goes wild. An audience member can be heard gasping "Oh my God". A big applause goes through the studio - Jauch quickly mentioning D) Agricultural Architects, just to get it out of the way - nobody listened to it anyway.
He makes it his final answer - the answer to decide if he would leave with one million in his pocket, or with a measly €500, because he was playing the special variant of German WWTBAM. For the addition of a fourth lifeline, the second milestone is removed, and the contestant will always have that horrible drop looming over his or her every decision. So the contestant did have that fourth lifeline available, and he took it to the last question - he had not found use for it, uselessly wasting that second milestone for no actual benefit.
Eventually, Sebastian Langrock, describing himself as a "vivid poker player", decided to go all-in and make an attempt on the big pot; after all, it wasn't a blind bet - his desire for a "waiter" in the question had been fulfilled, and there was virtually no way that was a mere coincidence.
Needless to say, he took it!
After his big win, the host decided to play a prank on one of the contestant's Phone-A-Friends - they'd act like if it was a normal question, as if the contestant needed help to continue, and wanted to see his reaction. The victim, his best friend's father, had to confess: "I'm afraid I don't know."
Jauch, with a big smile on his face, replied: "So you really don't know the question to this one? Hey, do you know what we absolutely do not give about that fact?" The audience erupts in laughter - Jauch continues: "We don't give a damn!" Explaining to the baffled person that Langrock had just won the million, he rejoiced in disbelief: "No way!"
