Today was the season premiere of the seventh season of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". The episode marked the beginning of a number of important changes on "Millionaire," including alterations to the actual gameplay.
Let me start off by saying that I was immensely impressed with the changes made for season seven. The elimination of the 50:50 and Switch the Question (lifelines which have been all but useless in recent years) and their replacement with Ask the Expert and Double Dip was a very good decision. Also, the Millionaire Menu, which shows the contestant's available lifelines, the money tree, and the categories of all the questions, was a very strong addition to the show. The time limits for the questions keep the game moving quickly, and pressure the contestant into quick decisions that make the game very exciting.
The graphical changes to the show were fantastic, and were a vast improvement over the uncharacteristic, splashy graphics of last season. The menu graphics were great, as were all of the on-screen graphics. The lifeline symbols have all been revamped, and everything seems to glisten and shimmer on the screen. Most importantly, the question graphics have been updated to include the timer, which counts down on the top of each question. When a contestant gives their final answer, the yellow bar sweeps over the answer choice from left to right. Then, the familiar green double flash appears if the answer is correct. The new intro sequence is also great and shows off the new timer in a stylistic fashion.
Lastly, this season features some major musical changes. The show's theme song and intro sequence have been elongated, allowing for a longer version of the Millionaire theme from the previous seasons. The theme song, along with all the music from the game, has the beat of a timer strung throughout it. Many cues from "Super Millionaire" are now used in the show, including at commercial breaks and during the Double Dip and Ask the Expert lifeline sequences. Lastly, the end credits of the show have an updated version of the "Super Millionaire" theme song that sounds absolutely incredible. I really hope they release this version as an mp3 or include it in a video game, because I really want a copy for myself, sans audience clapping.
For me, the season premiere was overwhelmingly positive in terms of the changes to "Millionaire". The new additions have rejuvinated my interest in the show, and hopefully everyone else's as well. Here's to a great new season of "Millionaire"!
