My favorite win that I remember watching when it happened was Joe Trela's million dollar win. His win in my opinion was the most impressive especially with the fact that he went through the last 5 questions without having a lifeline, and his questions were definitely tougher compared to John Carpenter. Not sure about the tougher part; it's a long running gag with those in computers about the moth, but I think his $500,000 question about the Exorcist/Captain Howdy was quite difficult; the others I find fairly simple, but with the disclosure that I usually know much more about trivia than the average Joe (not intended, still funny!). He did a heck of a job though, and cinching the top five as he did is insanity; nobody thought he'd get there; I sure didn't when it originally aired, thinking he'd stop around $125,000, $250,000. Still remember the date-I was watching with my mother by the fireplace, and I was convinced it was Roach, my mother's friend who called in, thought it was Japanese Beetle. I didn't think it was that because it was never (to my 7 year old memory) D, and a fly didn't seem large enough in body size to cause such a mess, relative to the other bugs. If you tell me Captain Howdy, out of context for that time, I most likely am thinking of Penn Jilette's band by the same name. Zool is either an incorrect spelling of Zuul from Ghostbusters, or the title character and bundle title of Commodore's Amiga 1200. More specfically, this would be from Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension, which was made in response to Sega's Sonic new Sonic series, released the year prior. Azazel is from XMen as a supervillain. However, if you look at Damien, this is one of the nastiest trick answers I can recall. Damien was one of the many priests, who tries to get rid of the demon from Regan. It does help to remember in the book Legion (or, in the film, Exorcist III) he was possessed by the Gemini Killer, but still, you could easily mix the two up, you know? Furthermore, while we didn't see it for obvious reasons, what appeared to be an absolute guess by Trela, he got the moth right. According to reports, he took just under an hour, 54 minutes to be exact, before deciding to go for A, Moth, alone. To deal with that much pressure, that long, to go for it, and be right? Wow. Top spot. Nancy Christy is a close second mainly because finally we got a woman, and women winning big in game shows is underrepresented on the whole, which, you guys might not see it, but having a woman matters to me, and is empowering to not just me, but others, potentially. To show she can stick with, beat, and stand as high as the men, it's something we don't see enough. There's also Kevin Smith who comes close, and is my bronze recipient, because of his quirkiness, with tales of his illicit drug use at what may have been a Woodstock-like event, his genuine love of the game, playing for socks, his steady minded approach, as evidenced by his question repeat request on the MDQ. There's also the amount of gall he took on $500,000; his PAF Jerry is 80% sure "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" was inscribed in the lobby of the Library of Congress. However, Kevin rejects that, going for the CIA, and is on his way to win the top prize.

The problem I have with the Exorcist question is A) it's not a bit part; Captain Howdy/Pazuzu is the main antagonist, and B) Captain Howdy sticks out so badly among the four that it has to be right. Having Pazuzu as the answer instead would have added some difficulty.

No objections there, Kevin, I think you're right, as I'd have much preferred to see D as Pazuzu. With that said, maybe that's what they were trying for on B, since it looks similar enough. Silly? A bit, but certainly possible, given some other top tier questions of the time were given answers that had somewhat of a similar pronunciation/spelling, but otherwise irrelevant. Had I written it, it'd be have been done your way, especially given the stakes, and the challenge necessary to maintain budget, large as the show's was, at that point.
That said, if you only vaguely remember the books/movies, Damien has the possibility to trip you up a bit, for whatever reason, given the fallibility of memory, at a given moment, and in this high-leverage context.

Oh absolutely. Is there another Exorcist name you could shoehorn in there? Maybe to replace Zool?

Dyer, Taney, and Klein would be my three incorrect choices, if I were the writer behind this. They have less significant roles, and much less likely not enough to stick with you as say a Damien would, and at least were in the work(s) itself.

I also remember watching David Goodman's win when I was in Niagara falls in 2000, and thinking "Man, he's the next John Carpenter!!!!" when I watched it Thinking about it now, I'd say that David Goodman's million dollar question was the easiest, but then again, at the time I'd say it was definitely not easy.

I agree, Goodman's question regarding the birthplace of Paddington Bear was very easy, it is childsplay that question. Plus he used all 3 lifelines on the last question because they were on the table - very useful. We know his friend certainly used the internet to answer the question, after the "it looks like we've got 100%" line. Yes, it looked like he could have been the second Carpenter

Realistically, there will never be another person to match what John Carpenter did. Steve Perry and David Goodman came close, but no one will EVER go through the entire bracket of questions again while still leaving lifelines on the table.

I personally love Kevin Smith, he just didn't seem to react at all that he won a million dollars until he looks up and sees the confetti falling, something about that just shows a great deal of humility that I really do have to appreciate.

Kevin Smith was truly a Kind, clever person that I believe everyone can relate to... He seems like a great kind hearted person that was truly shocked by the win. Also he seems to regret his past mistakes after the Phone-a-friend call to his Mother. Also, notably this was when they started to use the Massive novelty cheques.

They only did it once.

Not true. Although this wasn't shown on TV. Thanks for sharing that! Never seen that before. I wonder if they did that for other winners during the ABC era as well. I'll modify my point. Kevin Smith was the only one to get an oversized check on the air.
