After seeing the thread on what's your favorite Million dollar win, I have to ask, what contestants are your favorites that DIDN'T win the million, but still won quite a bit though in the end? There's several that come to my mind, my favorite was probably Justin Ray Castillo though. His run was one of the most exciting ones I remember seeing. Also, there was another older contestant from New Hampshire I believe that won $500,000 at the end of 2000. Can someone tell me what his name was again? I forgot. And finally, I remember my favorite celebrity contestants winning big were Drew Carey and Rosie O'Donnell.

I really liked Doug van Gundy's run. It was fun, and he was a really good player.

That reminds me, I also thought Michael Shutterly's $500,000 win was awesome, especially at the time when Millionaire had debuted.

If we can do big winners from other countries other than the u.s, I would say Paddy Spooner (Australia, April 1999, $250,000) and Trevor Sauer (Australia, September 4 2000, $500,000)

Ogi Ogas is in my opinion, the smartest guy to not win the million dollars if you ask me.

My favorite big money winners on Millionaire is Steve Perry and Ogi Ogas Steve had a high chance to win the top prize but the audience voted for incorrect answers that had been eliminated by the 50:50 and his friend didn'even guess the answer at all
Ogi Ogas had a very very high chance to win a top prize but he didn't want to risk. But it's his decision and he is a very smart. Unfortuanetly i can't find his complete run.
And on the clocked format several contestants walked away on 250/500k questions and they .guesses were correct. Roger Storm one of these contestants. I think if the 11-14 questions had a more time than 45 seconds (like 90 or 120 seconds)they may gone furher.
And offtop: John Carpenter was the top prize winner once and if he got with his brother guess on $500k question he probably had a chance won the million again and make it in the history (On Russian WWTBAM we have the only one contestant that seen the last question twice)

Too bad he blew his Phone a friend lifeline though on the $250,000 question, maybe he could've went all the way if he had saved a lifeline.

As for me, Ken Basin. His runthrough was really impressive and interesting.

As for me, Ken Basin. His runthrough was really impressive and interesting. But you're not right. Yes Ken Basin got to the last question but as we remember unfourtenatelly he screwed up and lost 475.000$ from his 500.000$ winnigs. According to this we can't consider Ken as big money winner because he leaved only with 25k.

And who are you to say "You're not right" to anyone?

As for me, Ken Basin. His runthrough was really impressive and interesting. I agree. His smug attitude was quite similar to John Carpenter, and that's what I really liked. He wasn't scared to take risks either; other contestants would have walked away at any of the questions which Ken was given after the 100,000 dollar mark. He played smart with most of his lifelines and many people really enjoyed watching his run, including me. His run was, inarguably, one of the most nerve-wracking ones in the history of Millionaire... (Also, $25K is still a lot of money wwtbamfan12 (COOLREGISHAIR111) ... it may not seem like much compared to the fact that he could have left with 500K dollars, but it's still 25K more than what he came to the studio with)

I really liked watching Steve Perry's run to the million, and I think the way he played his $1m question was very smart.
It's not very smart to say that Steve-o didn't win the million because he Asked the Audience first before doing the 50/50. No, it may have worked for David Goodman because (according to conspiracy) he knew the answer to his question, but Steve needed the audience result to spread out to all four answers to see if they really knew the answer, which would lead Regis to say: "So much for the audience!" The Phone a Friend deal is questionable, but I digress.
But of course, still not knowing the answer, while he could've gone for the million on a gut feeling, he did the smart thing and walked away with $500,000, knowing he could make a hefty dent on his law school bill with that kind of money.
