I stumbled across this video on facebook the other day.
The contestant says she thinks the answer is B, but does not confirm (ie final answer or lock it in) to Eddie that she want to lock it in. My understanding was in "Hot Seat Millionaire" if a contestant does not answer in time, then they are forced to "pass" if they still have the lifeline available to them (which she clearly did since it she was the first contestant). She did not give confirmation that she wanted to lock in B as her answer, however it was locked in without her confirmation. Surely this is unfair, even if it is the first question (therefore the easiest). What do you think?

Just checked the video again, and you're right, she didn't say final answer. It's not fun anymore; she didn't lock it.

You do not have to confirm your answer in Hot seat, I think, but people do it anyway
Edit: but you can tell by her tone that was her answer, so it was locked in, so I do not believe anything unfair happened

You'll most of the time never see a contestant say "Final" or "Lock-in" during the first 5-2 questions. They locked her answer because she looked confident you can hear it => She laughed/smiled when Eddie said "Burger ring" and at 0:15 "Even if Burger ring is an interesting one." which clearly states that she suppose it was not the right answer, and Eddie surely hear it and said "Have a look" and repeated the question a second time. I think that it was fair because she clearly did not read the question carefully, that's only her fault in this case.

To sum up the key points... - Usually on Hotseat, if you run out of time on the clock your pass lifeline will be used if available, however in this episode this did not happen. - You should always read the question carefully, consulting your brain before jumping to conclusions - The reason her answer was locked in is because even though she did not say "Final", she seemed almost certain in the tone of her voice and her facial expression. However typically in many versions it is common that on the first 5 questions they will just lock them in instantly when said. - You should try to look for "Hints" by the host. Eddie did repeat the question and said "Have a look", should she have been a bit more aware of her surroundings? Maybe the pressure of Millionaire's hotseat got to her?!

See, I think the rule I'm about to explain might explain why they locked without her saying, ¨Lock it.¨
In the UK, the rule is indeed, that, if you don't give an answer within the 15/30 seconds, you drop to 1000 pounds. There have been instances in the UK version where there was approx. 3 seconds left when a lifeline was in use and the clock was frozen. The thing was, an answer was said within those very few seconds, and they locked it in.
My assumption is: The rule is, an answer can be said without ¨Lock it in¨ in the last second, as it is in the UK, and other rave + clock formats I am not aware of.
The US had the rule during the Clock format that, you had to say ¨Final Answer¨ before the clock hit 0, even if it's right on that sound effect, possibly being a commercial technology shut down sound effect. I don't know. So, my assumption is that they could lock it in if she said her answer without permitting the computer person to lock it in. But, I am NOT a former, or future contestant on that show, so I haven't a clue.

It's very common, at least in the UK version, that the answers to Q1 - 5 are accepted straight away without saying final answer, most likely due to the fact of how easy the questions are and also due to the contestant's tone of voice. If they say "I'm unsure, it might be B" the host normally reminds them of their lifelines and does not accept B as the final answer.
