The same goes for the Million Dollar question as well. The dark stage really sets the pressure instead of using white across the pillars. On that note, what are the odds of seeing the old-style set again (2004-2010)? It was just something that I've been thinking about as of late, as I have not seen much of Millionaire during the Hot Seat era, apart from Youtube videos. I know this may sound stupid and illogical, but maybe the idea behind the set being a faint white would be to symbolize being "close to Heaven", perhaps? Being at the $1,000,000 question is the ultimate point of the game, and could also symbolize the "light at the end of the tunnel", hence the stage being colored white. That's not a bad statement at all you made there Stellex and that might be true, but I think for drama and the tension the set should get darker and darker as a contestant is getting further in the game as it always have been before the shuffle version of Millionaire was introduced. Since then, I feel like the drama and tension there used to be is gone or is least present, which is ironic because WWTBAM is meant to be a tension and drama quiz show. And the faint white, "close to Heaven","light at the end of the tunnel" thing doesn't sound like drama or tension to me, it would sounds more like a soothing and well-being atmosphere to me, which is not Millionaire spirit. Even the music isn't in the spirit of Millionaire anymore. Well, those are only my thoughts.

The "White-hot" color scheme was used during the Super Millionaire era, but only in The New Dimension.

At that point in Super Millionaire, that makes sense.
It was also used in between questions in the higher tiered values, except before the $1 Million question.

I will say that when I went to a taping, the current set is much smaller than the original. The pillars are also wider which means the light from them shines onto the audience much more. I was in the audience when they played a 500,000 question in both the old and new sets. I personally hate the white on the new set because there is no way to darken the audience due to the close proximity of these pillars. I'd love to see the old lighting return!

I also forgot to mention that technically, the lights down effect and positioning during Regis' run on the show and Meredith's is different very slightly. The first thing to notice is that the spotlights above the contestant stop abruptly and then fade away on the ABC version (seems like they were directly vertical), while on the syndicated show, the lights would kinda shine and move through to the contestant and host before suddenly fading (kinda at an angled position). One other thing I also wanted to point out:
This was something that I always liked, for the $500,000 question on Millionaire. The first set of lights that were directly above the host and the contestant would start moving first before the wall lights, while the lights on the wall would change color and get darker as they came down, instead of changing color after they were already down. THAT was a great effect that really brought you into that scary environment VERY quickly.

Gonna bump this cause there's a couple of other effects I forgot to point out from the first season of Millionaire:
Here's Doug Van Gundy's run, his lights down position was almost exactly the same as it was for the Nov. 1999 run, and also from Jan-Feb. of 2000. Only difference is that the lights dimmed quicker when they stopped moving.
Then there's Doug Szafran's run:
The front two lights moved the same compared to Michael Shutterly's run, though the two lights behind it are at a unique angle similar to how the front two lights were positioned for a good chunk of the year 2000 in the Regis era, and from almost all of Meredith's run too after 2003. I think this is the only time I've ever seen that with how those two lights are angled.

This is from the first season of US Millionaire - the first time a contestant reaches the 3rd tier. Notice how the lighting above them is significantly delayed.

I think a lot of these examples can be explained by the fact that it was still the first season, and they are still ironing out some of the kinks.
