So one thing I've noticed while watching old clips of Millionaire is that the way they dim the lights down has been through a few different changes. Here's the examples:
^ The lights down effect was similar to what they used later in the series, although they were slightly positioned differently, and the lights dimmed down quicker as well.
^ The lights down effect kinda traveled in different locations before all the lights ended in the same locating that they do when they officially dim down.
^ The lights don't really move all that much compared to the first two effects, and dim down a bit slower. They were also positioned almost the same way as a good majority of the syndicated millionaire episodes with Meredith.
^ The front 2 lights start pretty high and move quite a ways down before dimming. This was also the case in the first season of the syndicated run with meredith.
I honestly wonder if there was any reasoning why they changed how the lights dimmed, or if they just randomly programmed it without thinking about it. I like the 2nd lights down effect that was used from late 1999 until February of 2000, but the only thing that kills it is those d**n stairs being an eyesore with the lights still being lit in them.

I think that they changed it to give the sequence more of a dramatic effect. I honestly like the third one better mainly because everything turns dark after the lights go down, except for the spotlights on the hot seat and the blue lights on the sides of the stage.

Gives you a real appreciation for proper lighting work. I always tried to recreate that effect as a teenager.

Well, if this thread has been bump.... (Yeah, I know, I shouldn't post another message here...)
Here is another positioning that I NEVER seen on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, In 15 years...
Take a look...

I like that a lot. I'm glad to see the French are trying some new lighting effects on that fantastic new set of theirs.

Hmm, I agree that Lighting is very Dynamic and really suits the new studio well. I like how one the lights meet the centre podium the lights fade out well because The camera angle is in a good position. Also I like how the lights take up more of the studio.

Hmm, I think my favorite will be the second one. I like how the front-most lights (from the camera's perspective) kind of move outward before coming back in at the center...

Here is a strange one, this happens when about to play classic Millionaire: The old effect is NOWHERE near replicated in the shuffle format: Found this on YouTube sorry about the terrible quality, but at least it wasn't recorded with Parmesan cheese. What do you think about this lights down?

The problem is that today's lighting effects don't give you that dramatic effect whatsoever. While the game play can still be intense, it doesn't really bring you into that environment where you feel intimidated by your surroundings, at least from what I've seen.
I think the best lights down effect are no doubt from Super millionaire, although I really like the lighting effects from that video from the France version of the show. My favorite lights down effect from the regular Millionaire show was the one from the last video I posted on my original post on this topic. Going back to the current show though, look at this:
I mean, this just happened recently, and while the outcome was very good, I just couldn't really get all that excited about watching what was going on around the contestant. It felt pretty bland.

It's certainly disappointing that the $500k setup is brighter than the previous two questions. If $500k used the exact same blue as the previous two, it'd be better.

I completely agree, the $500k question environment makes it feel like you're still playing for only like $5,000.....ugh it's an eyesore.

The same goes for the Million Dollar question as well. The dark stage really sets the pressure instead of using white across the pillars.
On that note, what are the odds of seeing the old-style set again (2004-2010)? It was just something that I've been thinking about as of late, as I have not seen much of Millionaire during the Hot Seat era, apart from Youtube videos.

I know this may sound stupid and illogical, but maybe the idea behind the set being a faint white would be to symbolize being "close to Heaven", perhaps? Being at the $1,000,000 question is the ultimate point of the game, and could also symbolize the "light at the end of the tunnel", hence the stage being colored white.

I liken it to a "white-hot" scenario. I actually think the white pillars would look fabulous if they could get the surrounding audience darkened more.
