Just a few days ago, the UN court in The Hague has ruled that the islands within the South China Sea (Locally known in the Philippines as West Philippine Sea) are part of the Philippines and not China, despite of their claims that it is within the "9-dash line" which they say has historical basis. But according to the UN, China's claim is invalid due to the fact that the only historical furthest territory is the Hainan island just beside Vietnam. PH base their ruling set up by the UN. But as usual, when the results of the trial was revealed, China was snob at it and called the ruling "a waste paper".
A lot of countries around the globe had their support for the PH on the territorial dispute. Neighboring countries in the South East Asia thinks that PH adheres to the law and deserves it and if they want to settle the dispute on this issue, a diplomatic talk must be held. But China only wants bilateral talks with PH and if PH will talk about rulings of UN, they will ignore it. It is surprising that Russia, a communist country, is also in support of the PH on the subject matter and that China just disappoints Russia in their aggressiveness.
So here's the deal, why are we fighting for it?
Because it contains natural resources and most importantly, it has the 3rd largest reserve of crude oil in the world. It can be used to power up and used as a strategic resource for energy requirements.
We are welcome to know that it is ours but we, as Filipinos are not selfish of the territory. Everybody is welcome to find resources in the area provided that countries looking for resources are responsible enough.
But as of now, we cannot confidently popping the champagne corks just yet. There is still bigger trouble ahead of us. If China would still assert to claim the territory in the said sea and not adhere to law, they might use their forces for combat. Then supporting countries especially USA will defend the PH against it. IN SHORT, THE WORST CASE SCENARIO WILL BE "PREPARE FOR AN UPCOMING WWIII".
