So a Tournament of Ten was conducted in 2009 immediately following Ken Basin losing his MDQ. Meredith kept saying over and over again that of those who qualified for the tournament, the highest seeded contestant to answer correctly would win the million dollars.
I understand they did this just so they could crown a millionaire for the first time in six years, but does that mean that theoretically, no one might've become a millionaire? If none of the ten got their question correct, would nobody have won the million?

I guess so. Sam Murray was the only one to even attempt the million dollar question, then he got it right then he got the million. To give the highest seed the million without them answering the MDQ would be a little unfair. Of course. since the whole format is way back in the history of millionaire now and someone did win the million, probably no one knows what might have been if it was in the other case.

Or if there might have been a Tournament of Ten to begin with if Ken Basin actually won the million. Of course, I'd have preferred that over the Tournament of Ten anyway, but them's the ropes.

If none of the ten got their question correct, would nobody have won the million? If I remember right, had no one got their question right, the #1 seed (Jehan Shamsid-Deen) would automatically get it because she was the highest seed. The moment that Sam answered his question correct, he became the de-facto winner. Would there have been a tournament if Ken won? If I remember right, Ken's run was during the 10th Anniversary special and the Tournament of Ten started after the primetime special. So you could safely assume, no. If Ken (or anyone during the 10th anniversary special) won the million, ABC/Disney wouldn't have sprang for the tournament at all.

I have no other evidence for this than my vague recollection, but I think somebody from BuzzerBlog said that they would have done another ToT later, if nobody had gone for it (and thus won the million). I can't find the tweet anymore, unfortunately.

Looking back, it makes me REALLY wish Alan Carver made it to the tournament, because theoretically, he was at $25,000 and if he made it to the tournament, he had everything to gain and nothing to lose. I feel like he could've given the others a run in the tournament more than anything.

Even if he got his question right, Sam would have came along and knocked him out.

He used up 30 seconds during his run.

If he walked with $50,000 instead of $25,000 -- then he would have been ahead of Sam. He used up 30 seconds during his run. But clearly he was never going to walk. He was quite determined to win the million, and that meant taking a chance on a wrong answer that he and the expert were sort of in agreement with and saving the two lifelines for the last three questions.

Exactly. If you wanna play "What-if", imagine that he used his DD to win the $100k, then maybe walks on $250k. Even then, I doubt he was walking.
