Here is a question that popped in my mind...
Why did the UK decide to no longer use the classic Strachan beds, and used the Ramon Covalo beds?

Perhaps it was a cost-cutting move. And replacing only the question beds but basically keeping the theme music didn‘t distort the recognizability of the brand as much as a completely different theme would have done. Or maybe it was just about modernization. Their calling the new cues „re-energized“ suggests to me that they found the old ones had gotten a bit stale. If so, they went from stale to blah, IMO.

Well, if you thought replacing the cues in the UK were bad, replacing the cues in the US was even worse, because as you know, starting in 2010, the US version had NO familiar music, and even worse, had eliminated the hot seat, and shuffled up all of the first ten questions (which literally no other country did!) until 2015.

IIRC, I think I read somewhere (maybe even on this site somewhere) that it was part of an entire rebranding of the show as part of the sell off to 2WayTraffic from Celador. Cavalo had created an entire new set of cues to use for the show, including a new theme, completely different from the original. However, the production team decided to keep some of the classic cues, because they didn’t feel that all of Cavalo’s new theme fitted with the show, so they kept some of the Strachan cues to keep the show recognisable as the Millionaire that the public had knew and had loved for 9 years, and ‘reenergise’ some of the parts of the music that contained the eight ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ notes, which is why the Rave theme, Hot Seat Crossover, £1,000 and £50,000 Win, and Closing Theme all have the same tune as their Strachan counterparts. These parts of the new soundtrack weren’t composed by Cavalo, but my (I think) Nick Magnus. I’m not sure whatever happened to the rest of Cavalo’s soundtrack, although the Main Theme was available on his website for a while, not sure whether it still is. Not sure if all of this is completely right, but this is what I think I came remember. Hope it helps!

I seem to remember reading (possibly on this site) that the Strachans were asked to compose a new score but rejected the project as they were too busy.

So then if 2WayTraffic is pretty much responsible for the entire rebranding in the UK, are they also responsible for the clock format in the US? But then why would they keep the fast-track format with Cavalo beds in the UK and then have an entirely different format in the US with Strachan beds?

If I remember right Disney was responsible for the US Clock format, much like how Millionaire Hot Seat was a result of Nine Network wanting a faster game.

That is correct. Disney’s rights to the series give them control over the U.S. format that other countries do not have for their local versions. The leaked Sony documents shed a lot of light on this topic. If Disney were to let their rights lapse, control would shift back to Sony/2WayTraffic and they could rebrand the show to match the international format.

So they still have the rule where you're supposed to use the same music and set in other countries, but the US is exempt from this because Disney has the right in the US?

Correct. Disney’s control over the U.S. version is unique among all of the international variants.
