Will there be a 20th anniversary celebration in 2019? And if so, will the classic format, hot seat, lifelines, music, Fastest Finger round, and everything else be returning? Will the show move back to New York City, and will Regis Philbin return as host, if he's still around? If not, then I would like to see UK host Chris Tarrant take his place. And will there be celebrities playing for charity? If so, I would like it to be a month-long event, with the first two weeks dedicated to ordinary people, and the last two weeks dedicated to celebrities. I would like to see celebrities from various ABC, Freeform, Disney Channel, and Disney XD shows, as well as Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm movies. Two celebrities that I would like to see in particular are Frozen co-stars Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, since Frozen 2 comes out in 2019. I'd love to see Elsa and Anna take on the hot seat.

It is hard to say. If there is a 20th anniversary celebration I am expecting a fastest finger round. It is hard to say if Regis will come back or not. In my opinion I think Chris Harrison would host it. I think they will use the same format they are using now, including no hot seat. Like we saw in the 10th anniversary celebration, they used the clock format and not the original. I think they would move it back to New York considering ABC is there. I also think there will be celebrities playing for charity. I am crossing my fingers that ABC decides to do a 20th anniversary celebration. After all WWTBAM saved ABC.

I don't see it happening.
If on the off chance they do bring it back for a special run, I don't think people would like it. There's a reason people fell in love with the original format and none of that is there anymore. The clock format was close enough people still recognized it by the way it looked and sounded, but it is nothing like the hit it was.

There were a lot of very subtle hints at the taping I went to in July that pointed towards a 20th anniversary special in 2019. coasterrocker88 saw these same hints at his taping, which included two brand new hot seat chairs wrapped in plastic backstage, the older light rigging and spotlights from the primetime era above the current set, the addition of a fifth spotlight to the sides where the old Fastest Finger podiums would sit (one spotlight per podium), and, in coasterrocker88's specific taping, an ABC executive and the show's executive producer were apparently on set testing primetime-style lighting settings. My bet is on something happening in 2019.

It sounds like they're testing the feasibility of a primetime run. It seems a bit early to start prepping for a 2019 anniversary special, though. I wonder if they're planning on adding WWTBAM to ABC's summer game show block this year along with Pyramid and Match Game.

That would be amazing!

I wonder if they're planning on adding WWTBAM to ABC's summer game show block this year along with Pyramid and Match Game. I never thought of that. I think then there is a strong possibility considering the Summer Game Show Block is doing so well. Also the fact that WWTBAM started on ABC helps.

The 2016 classic wouldn't be much of a throwback for an anniversary special, let alone 20th.

What I'm wondering is, with lots of people on the internet nowadays, if they ever decide to do a 20th anniversary special, how will Phone-a-friend work? Or will it be replaced with something else (like +1)?

Or will it be replaced with something else (like +1)? Well if anyone remembers, the UK version's Phone a Friend in the last few years had the contestant's Phone a Friend's sequestered in a booth somewhere so they could not look up the answer. Of course this probably meant that they had to go with the contestant to their taping.

Yes, in the UK version, instead of discontinuing the Phone-a-Friend lifeline like the U.S. version did, due to Disney's influence on the show, the UK version simply changed the way the lifeline worked; instead of leaving the Phone-a-Friends at home, they bring them to the studio and place them backstage in isolated sound-proof booths, where they can't see or hear any of the action that takes place in the main studio until they are called for help, and where they don't have any access to the internet.

Well, it could be possible that there will be a 20th Anniversary celebration in 2019 - and if it DOES happen, that would be awesome! But I still have to agree with sbarsodo...it's not easy to say if it will actually happen.

I hope that it happens, using the classic set design, hot seat, music, graphics, and everything else from 1999-2010. And I hope that Regis Philbin returns, or if not him, then Chris Tarrant. I think that he needs to host the U.S. version of the show for at least one syndicated season.
