In the many versions of Millionaire, we've not only seen the classic lifelines of the show (50:50, Ask the Audience, Phone-A-Friend), but other lifelines have been coming in, such as Double Dip and Switch the Question. These lifelines could be used in a smart way by making specific combinations to make it easier for the contestant to give the right answer. But I've been wondering: Which of those lifelines would actually be the most useful one of them all?
Of course it's a topic that can have multiple opinions. So, I decided to ask you guys! Which lifeline do you consider the most useful one and why?

I think the most useful lifeline would have to be 50:50. Whenever I play a video game version of WWTBAM I always save 50:50 for last. This is because it is a definite. If you ask the audience there is a chance they can vote wrong, if you phone a friend there is a chance they won't know. If you use 50:50 you would know that one of these two answers is definitely right. As for double dip, it is a suspenseful lifeline because you cannot walk away. At least when you use 50:50 you can walk away. Switch the question I was never a big fan of because they may switch the question to one you do not even know.

Well, all lifelines could be the most useful, dependant on the situation. If you know of two answers that are definitely wrong, 50:50 (or if you're certain, Double Dip) would be the best. If you don't have a clue, but you know someone who's in expert in the subject, then Phone-A-Friend is the best. Usually, Ask the Audience is the best lifeline in terms of accuracy, up until around the 32,000-mark, where the results then often get quite bunched up, with 2 or 3 answers all being close together. Switch the Question is a bit harder to throw in strategy-wise, and personally, I see it more as a last-ditch attempt to get a question right. I would certainly say the other 4 main lifelines trump it, as they would normally have a better chance of helping. Ask the Audience also provides a couple of issues in some countries. Although it doesn't happen in most versions, some have had to scrap the lifeline due to the audience purposely voting for the wrong answer to throw the contestant. Obviously in these countries, Ask the Audience would be completely worthless. In countries where there aren't any rules against Phone-A-Friends using the internet, this lifeline becomes the most useful outright, as long as you have someone who can type quickly, and a decent internet connection. You could argue that 50:50 is the best lifeline, simply because it's the only one that guarantees your chance of giving the right answer increasing. Whilst in practise it may not always help, on paper it is the most helpful lifeline. A Phone-A-Friend may not answer in time, the Audience may be split with numbers like 25-24-27-24, which is no real help, but 50:50 will ALWAYS remove 2 incorrect answers. It goes without saying, but obviously, a 50:50/Double Dip combination is the only lifeline usage which 100% ensures the contestant moving up the money tree. In conclusion, personally, I don't think there is a 'best' lifeline. I feel some lifelines maybe aren't always as good as other ones, such as Switch the Question, but every single lifeline in the show does have a time when it could be helpful. The Original Three seem to be the most helpful, but it is hard to differentiate between them in a generic case. With context, which lifeline would give you the best chance may be obvious, but without any context, they could all be helpful. (Also, for the record, I was typing my post when @sbarsodo replied. I didn't steal his idea, I promise. )

For me, the lifelines can work like this:
50:50 would be helpful if you're not too confident about an answer, and just want to narrow it down to maybe boost your confidence in said answer.
Phone A Friend can be helpful as well if you actually do trust your friends that, yes, you can rely on them to give you the right answer.
Ask The Audience is also helpful if you want to get a good idea of what the audience members think, but the results should be taken with a grain of salt.
Overall, there really isn't a lifeline that's more useful than the other. I think that they're all quite useful and fair.

That's very interesting. Indeed, all the lifelines could be useful at some point, since there are many different ways of how they work, depending on the way it's used in the international versions. Of course, most of them work the same way as in the other versions, but there are indeed a few differences at this point.
