This just confuses the hell out of me.
How do these people find old threads to bump? Do they just search for them or go page-by-page to find them? I'm legitimately curious.
Someone who bumps threads, please enlighten the rest of us.

I am very curious to know this, myself!

Me too. Somebody bumped a year-old dead thread last night, and I'm like, "Dude, why? Can't you read the rules? Or at least the warning above the thread?" It just puzzles me to no end. SMH.

GSK I've always been a doubter myself about the very same thing, either people surely are ignorant of the warning thread. Or they just don't care.

As someone who's done this before, usually when I do it, it's because I'm looking through someone's recent posts or threads and trick myself into thinking that the post is recent. IMO, it's just general ignorance or forgetting to look at the date when reading through a pages-long thread.

I think you'll find on other message boards, bumping an old thread is preferred as opposed to starting a new one. That is, as long as what you're contributing is worthwhile.

I don't understand why bumping a thread is so frowned upon here. Sure, if whatever has been added is pretty much pointless and doesn't add much, then yes, the bump itself is also pointless and should probably be avoided - but, in that case, I'd argue a response to the thread in the first place is what should probably be avoided already, regardless of whether it's a new or an old thread. But if there's something legitimately new or informative to add, then it shouldn't be much of a problem?

If you’re legitimately contributing something new to the conversation, bumping the dead thread is actually preferred. It’s just that what usually ends up happening is that dead threads are bumped for no particular reason at all, except maybe to inflate post count. That is what’s truly frowned upon.

This thread has been inactive for over 45 days but it still appears prominently on my thread list. I think it was the fourth one down for me. If that's the case for most bumped threads, maybe it's the forum's system at fault.
Edit: Never bumped a thread before. Thought I could shed some light on the situation.
Edit: It's actually the first one on the list, not the fourth.

Some of the sections, including this one, get considerably less traffic than others. A good habit to get into is looking at the date because, as you said, the fourth thread down may be months old.

Something I actually notice is that the dead thread warning doesn't show up when you are on the website on a smartphone.

If you view it in the mobile view, then you're correct, it doesn't show up. If, however, you're weird like me, and like the desktop version on your phone, it will still show up.
