In the earlier formats of WWTBAM, the contestants had their basic money tree with random questions showing up on the screens, which they were supposed to answer. When the clocked edition debuted, the money tree received a new feature - revealing the categories on the questions! That way, the contestant was able to see if it was a question that he knew about or if the person would have trouble answering the question because of the category. I wonder if the categories had been displayed on the contestant's screen during the question. Later, in the Shuffle version, the feature had been kept, but the categories were actually scrambled in order to make the game more exciting. It was quite nice, but also a bit unnecessary, because they had been random in Classic Millionaire already. What do you guys think about the categories for each question? Was it a nice idea to implement them and keep them for the Shuffle format - if so, why?

The categories, to me, serve no real purpose. How would a fancy title change if the player knew the answer to the question to come or not? How would it make any difference? I believe the categories were cleraly there for nothing more than showmanship. They gave the host a good way of making a little wordplay or increased rhe expectation factor of the home audience. In any case, I do not think - and I do think most will agree - that the categories were really there to make the player’s life easier.

I actually think that complex, intricate category titles is one of those god-awful game show clichés... And I'm not just talking about Millionaire; I'm talking about game shows in general.

Could affect a player's decision to gamble or not. If I'm sitting on $50,000, trying to decide to take it or go for $100,000, I'm more likely to gamble if I see the category for $250,000 is a strong subject for me.

That last thing hadn’t occured to me, but I think one wouldn’t gamble on the 100,000 question if they didn’t know the answer to it, no matter how they felt about the 250,000 one. Because gambling on the question you have in front of you is what decides if you stay in the game and therefore, if you even have the chance to play for the category you feel you are good at. Plus, the category names are not really fixed -they are simply titles that could hide anything behind them. And besides, a tough question is a tough question no matterif you feel you are strong in that category. I guess what I am trying to say is, maybe now I have a better understanding of the mindset behind this decision, but I still think they are useless for the player in the overall game.
