I can confirm that the show gave $1,000 to contestants who got an answer wrong during 2014, when I was a contestant. Many people don't realize that game shows do not cover any travel expenses of contestants, so I think it's fair that Millionaire offers a $1,000 "consolation prize." Many people also don't know that contestants also are required to pay taxes on their winnings. In my case, I also paid for travel expenses to Salt Lake City for my audition out of pocket. Fortunately, I ended up winning $20,250, so I was quite pleased with my result! Here in the UK, the winnings were always advertised as tax free.

Thanks for the welcome! My appearance on Millionaire definitely was a memorable moment in my life. As a fellow alum, I'm sure you agree. 100%, and the broadcast itself is just one part of it. The whole experience, from the phone call to the taping, then the waiting, then finally the broadcast, is a whirlwind.
