When contestants lose before the first threshold on the current version, they are said to "go home with nothing" like in the old days where their fate was emphasized with a big "$0" on the screen. Then the shuffle format gave all contestants a guaranteed $1,000 no matter when they lost. I heard that contestants in the Harrison era who lose in the first tier do indeed get $1,000 even though they don't mention it on the show anymore. Is that true?
I do know for certain that some first-tier losers this season have not even had their short run aired, possibly to save the contestant from embarrassment. I know someone who taped the same day as two people who lost in the first tier and neither one aired. One of them even starting shouting profanities and his family had to step down from the audience and calm him down.

Yep. If you go out in the first five, you get $1,000, even if you don't air.

It has confused me because now these days if someone misses one of the first tier questions there if no indication if a person leaves empty handed or not (no graphics indicating shows up). Because it still happens quite a but you'd think they would still give them $1,000 just for playing but I do think that's the case.

They give you $1,000 if you go out on the first five. They just say on the air that you win "nothing".

Not that anyone cares but in my opinion, they shouldn’t give money to those who go out in the first five questions. Those questions are incredibly easy and since they start with lower amounts it makes, say, the first or second question rather pointless. Besides if the contestant can’t answer one of the first five , essentially, humorous questions, then I don’t think he was suitable for the show anyway.

Valid points, but remember that contestants now travel to be on the show at their own expense. If the show doesn't guarantee $1,000, they'd only get locals trying out.

But has the $1,000 consolation always been the case since the very beginning?
I remember how much of a big deal Regis made when his contestants lose out on the first five questions. In one of the zero dollar winner specials, he went on and on about how the special pool of returning contestants left the first time around with "ABSOLUTELY. NOTHING!"
Also, I do recall a contestant actually walking away before reaching the $1,000 milestone with Meredith Vieira. They used up all three of their lifelines and ended up walking on either the $500 or $1,000 question and they left with less than $1,000. I wonder how that would've worked if they were guaranteed $1,000 for showing up.

I remember somebody who lost on the $1,000 question in the Meredith era implying they really did receive nothing.
However, back when the show filmed in NYC, I believe they covered travel expenses. This is no longer the case.

This is no longer the case. Partially correct. Meredith did mention that they "received" nothing, but the rule is in place since the original syndicated runs that contestants get $1000. ABC only paid for the prime-time contestants' hotel and travel. (If you were within subway/bus distance of the studio, or somewhere close in New Jersey, they gave you a cab.) During the syndication runs, you always get $1000 to help aid you for travel.

The first five are noticeably harder (or at least trickier) now than they ever were in the classic/clock eras, imo. Never forget that one BuzzFeed question.

If $1000 was always guaranteed, then why did that one woman walk away with $300? (And how the hell has that not been uploaded to youtube yet?)

I did a "WayBack Machine" archive on each of the rules pages as disclosed on the ABC/Millionaire website dating all the way back to Regis. (I was supposed to do a project for the forums breaking down the differences, but I generally forgot about it.) Each one has a clause similar to the current Rules page that "this is the amount you win if you're wrong." (Key words... IF YOU'RE WRONG.) I don't know if it counts walking away.

I can confirm that the show gave $1,000 to contestants who got an answer wrong during 2014, when I was a contestant. Many people don't realize that game shows do not cover any travel expenses of contestants, so I think it's fair that Millionaire offers a $1,000 "consolation prize." Many people also don't know that contestants also are required to pay taxes on their winnings. In my case, I also paid for travel expenses to Salt Lake City for my audition out of pocket. Fortunately, I ended up winning $20,250, so I was quite pleased with my result!
