In your opinion, what do you think the most useless lifeline was on any version of the show? Personally, I believe it to be Ask the Expert, as so often they were experts on one very specific topic, but knew little about anything else. There were so many times where the expert was used and they weren't sure, or they led the contestant astray. I get they wanted to stop the use of the internet by retiring the Phone-a-Friend, but I don't think Ask the Expert was a very useful alternative. Too bad they didn't think of the Plus One back then, as it is a good alternative to the Phone-a-Friend, in my opinion.

For me, it's Crystal Ball, which appeared on Season 11 of US Millionaire. Contestants only knew the value of the question they were facing? No, doesn't sound like a lifeline at all...(Even though that season used the Shuffle format...)

I never heard of Crystal Ball. Are there any clips of it being used?

Crystal Ball is definitely not a great lifeline, but I think it served the purpose it was supposed to do. Also, it didn't replace any other lifelines like Ask the Expert did, it was just added, and only provided a gain, not a loss. In the video linked above, the contestant uses the Crystal Ball to see how much a difficult question was worth, as he was going to pass on it when the Crystal Ball revealed the value to be $25,000. As a result of this, he took a guess, and got it right, nabbing him the $25,000. It's not the best, but I still think Ask the Expert is worse. Thank you for the response, hadouken85.

For me, it would be Switch The Question. I know that it could change a question that you don't like, but it could turn worse than that. It's a pity that Switch was a risk format lifeline in Poland. I would prefer a double dip over that, but now It's gone for good.

What if they used Three Wise Men instead of Ask the Expert? Sorry if I go off topic.

On the topic of “useless or not”. I think the Phone a Friend lifeline is too much of a gamble to be called a “lifeline”. Half of the time time friend is not certain, and about 15% of the time they don’t even have a clue. Actually, now that I think about it, Ask the Host is a big gamble too. Clarkson definitely has a good set of brains. However, I’ve only seen him sure about 3 times.

crystal ball, it does not quite help you with the question since it only shows you the price behind it.
