Hello all! The U.S. clock format is perhaps my favourite version of Millionaire, possibly second to the original. I just can't decide. Anyway, I'd like to get your opinions on how you'd like to see the clock format to return if it were to return. For me, one of the biggest problems of the clock format would be that there wasn't enough time for the higher level questions. 45 seconds to answer a half million dollar question is a little too short in my opinion, so here's how I'd change that. The first five questions were given an adequate time limit, in my opinion, so I'd bump the clock up to 20 seconds for the first five questions. For the next five, I'd give the contestants 40 seconds to answer, and for the next four, I'd give 60 seconds. For the final question, I'd get rid of the banked time mechanic, and simply give 120 seconds to deliberate and answer. 3-4 minutes is just too long for me, and that's often what contestants had when they got there. I liked the use of categories, but wish the host would reference them more. Usually, at the beginning of the game, they'd just say "here's the categories" and then they'd never be talked about again. At the beginning of level 1, I'd have the host say the names of all five categories in advance, and then rattle off the questions. Once the fifth question was answered correctly, the category would be mentioned before every question, and the contestant would occasionally be asked how they feel about a specific category. As for lifelines, I'd have the contestant start off with Ask the Audience and 50:50, then once the first milestone was cleared, they'd unlock the Plus One and Switch, and if they were to get to the final five questions, they'd unlock the Double Dip and Three Wise Men. Finally, here is a breakdown of the money ladder I would use for the revived clock format.
15. $1,000,000 14. $500,000 13. $250,000 12. $150,000 11. $100,000 10. $50,000 9. $30,000 8. $20,000 7. $15,000 6. $10,000 5. $5,000 4. $3,000 3. $2,000 2. $1,000 1. $500

I've been toying around with this format for a while (mostly because the graphics and music from this format were amazing and honestly lived for way too short), so here's my take on it:
- Longer time limits. People were super rushed on the original run and ended up wasting time or just flat-out getting the question wrong because the time limits were so short. 30 seconds for the first five questions, 60 for the middle five, and 90 for the last five are what I've found to be a good mix between too short and too long to not be exciting anymore. For the last question, I would make it 90 seconds plus 30 for every lifeline left, so it's even more beneficial to save lifelines for the final question. - Lifelines. I've always thought that having five or six lifelines in a game feels way too generous and honestly causes them to lost their value (imagine if someone used all six lifelines on one question!); I've always wanted the classic three lifelines (with 50:50's UK clock rules) plus Ask the Expert. - Better money tree. Let's be honest, the second money tree (and the current US one, for that matter) have been really bad because they fail to recognize the concept of risk vs. reward. Why would I risk $15,000 to gain another $10,000 if I don't know the answer? The original has always been the best at minimizing this, but any tree where you would gain more money than you would be risking is okay in my book.
That's about it for me. I feel the US clock format had some of the best production value I've seen from Millionaire, but it was just executed rather poorly.

I hate the format with limited time. In a timely game you have to make a quick decision, and in the classic you have a lot of it, which in fact causes more doubt and stress. That's what built the tension. I think that returning the clock format is a bad idea

One of my favourite parts of the clock format was the music. I loved how the music got intense near the end, especially the Q11-14 music. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I still think it should have lived a bit longer.

I didn't care for the clock format too much. The thing I did like about it was every contestant had the same amount of time to answer each question. Without a time limit, a contestant can sit there looking at their question for half the episode (especially on more difficult questions). With this format, that was prevented from happening. I also think that maybe instead of receiving their unused time to answer the million dollar question , they were given a set amount of 2 or 3 minutes. This way more contestants have a chance of getting on the show and certain contestants couldn't occupy the whole show on higher level questions.

I think the best way to do a clock format, personally, is more along the lines of the UK clock format in terms of time - say 20 seconds for the first tier of questions and 40 seconds for the next tier, with no time limit on the last tier - but with a money tree as follows: Question | Value | Question | Value | Question | Value | --------- | -------- | 05 | $7 500 | 10 | $75 000 | 01 | $500 | 06 | $10 000 | 11 | $125 000 | 02 | $1 000 | 07 | $15 000 | 12 | $250 000 | 03 | $2 500 | 08 | $25 000 | 13 | $500 000 | 04 | $5 000 | 09 | $50 000 | 14 | $1 mn + Bonus |
It would be a return to a 14 question money tree, and it would also be the return of the bonus: a $10 000 boost to the jackpot amount for each show without a millionaire, or as I'd imagine it, a $5 000 boost per contestant that fails to correctly answer the final question. I like the concept of allowing the contestant to set the question that becomes the second threshold, which is why there's only 2 (bolded) threshold values. In terms of lifelines, 50:50, ask the audience, and phone a friend are available from the off, and I'd say that either Ask the Host or Switch the Question ( not both) could be unlocked at question 9 ($50 000). EDIT: Oop, didn't even realize it was a dead thread. My apologies. :x

I wouldn't like the clock format, the shuffle format, the hot seat format or every other nonsense fancy alternative format to come back. Classic format is the one and the only Millionaire version that should exist.

I like clock format. It has changed wwtbam format. Classic format is so boring and I love a high-risk, high speed of clock format

I would like to see that Q11-Q14 time amounts are raised to 60 seconds and before the 14th question the contestants could choose either they skip Q14, but they could use only one lifeline during the final question (if they have one left then it will be taken away, and of course the contestant would be asked about which lifeline(s) they wanna sacrifice) or they play Q14 but there would be no clock on it.
