According to TV Guide and Wikipedia, Regis announced that he is going to have hip-replacement surgery. He is taking a leave of absence until some time in 2010.

His surgery is set for December 1 (tomorrow). He apparently announced it on "Live" on November 24. Wikipedia quotes him saying:

"I'm allowed to announce I'm going into hip surgery. I'm going to have my hip replaced. I've been limping around here. It's really painful," he said on Monday's Live, which is broadcasting from Las Vegas this week. The surgery is scheduled for Dec. 1. Philbin is expected to take four to six weeks off to recover. "I'll be back next year," he said, though he didn't offer a firm date.

Considering the fact he's currently 78, do you think he'll retire soon? I know he said he'd be back. But for how long?

I don't think he'll retire anytime soon. He's a human dynamo. He had the much more serious operation a few years ago, and he bounced back from that in no time! I wish him the best of luck with his operation.

Of special note to "Millionaire" fans, Regis' hip troubles started when a contestant on the 10th anniversary primetime revival requested a chest bump from him, and he stumbled when getting back into the chair.
