In the last two episodes of Kimmel Millionaire we've averaged at precisely 2 questions above the $32K mark (the really exciting bit, in my opinion). A typical Chris-era UK episode averaged 13. A typical Regis-era episode averaged 17. (Yes, I've done my research with this because I was so intrigued) Sure, those numbers would be down a tad for celebrity games (well, maybe just the Chris one), but even then, by those standards, this version of Millionaire is painfully slow. While (as some of you may know) I'm not a fan of Speedy Reege, I think kicking it into second or third gear now may do the show some good. Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but that doesn't sound right... AHHHH, I'm an idiot! I meant to say questions above $1,000. AHHH, darn. Yeah, it was really early in the morning (for me, at least) when I wrote this. My apologies! So, to correct the record: The Regis Era averaged about 17 questions above the $1,000 level per show. The Chris Era of the UK version averaged about 13 questions above the £1,000 level per show. This era has averaged, thus far, 10 questions above the $1,000 level per show. The difference those three questions make (to me, the original British pacing is ideal - the pacing of the Regis era is much too fast) is, to me, quite jarring.

I liked the fast paced game play during the Regis era. I always loved Regis' urgency to play Millionaire which, IMO really added to the suspense and drama of the show. Lets Play Millionaire RIGHT now *points at camera*. The production back then was awesome too. The lights went down right after he said it. You just can't beat that. I feel like Jimmy is going to get it. By this third show I think he's really going to step it up, hopefully the production and pace pick up a bit too.

As much as I would like to see some changes to the production of this new version, let's not forget that these episodes were done right before all TV productions shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire show was filmed in one weekend, so that may or may not have an effect on why the show looks weird compared to other versions. But I do hope that if they do get renewed for a normal civilian edition and if the studio audience returned, production would be a lot better.

One of the reasons I like Regis’s style so much is that he kept the show moving at a brisk pace. He learned from decades of live television how to pack as much content into an hour of television as possible, and that translated to a really meaty hour of Millionaire.
On that same note, the US clock format forced a similar impression of pacing, though I’m not sure it actually delivered on more questions per episode. The tight editing and timing of the music and graphics around the clock made for a fast-feeling 30 minutes.
I guess it comes down to personal preference. If you prefer watching contestants agonize over the questions and their decisions, you’ll like a slower pace. If you prioritize the presentation/showmanship, you’ll like a quicker pace to squeeze as much of the content you enjoy into a single episode. There is no right answer, only preferences!

Speaking as a former contestant, I was disappointed that the producers ignored the game's most famous rule about "final answer" and gave Nikki Glaser a do-over. Yes, I realize that the money is for charity, so give her the guaranteed $32,000 minimum and put on a contestant who actually knows the rules of the game. When I appeared on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, producers and even an attorney spent most of a morning poring over our nondisclosure agreement and the rules of the game, such as once a contestant says the words "final answer" their answer is locked in and cannot be changed under any circumstances. Until now. I agree with the fans who feel that this sets a dangerous precedent and damages the integrity of the game. I'm not sure if I want to watch Nikki's next episode, but I kind of feel like the powers that be should have just left the show cancelled instead of putting this on. Aside from this highly questionable decision, the corona version with no audience and B list celebrities simply isn't that interesting to watch.

Isn’t that how it goes in life, though? There are two sets of rules - one set for the rich and famous, the other for the rest of us. It also is different of having no audience, since there’s never been anything like this before. Since you were a contestant, I really feel for you. That’s not fair to you or anybody else who’s ever played the game. That said, I love Millionaire way too much to not watch it, but hopefully, like others said, that’s a one off at best.

Plus, the US version isn’t the only version taping without an audience. Germany, Russia, Turkey, Vietnam, all taping without audiences. The French version has Camille and the celebrity contestants record from home.

I would hope that at this point, we don't need to ask for people to not spoil the episode until 24 hours after it's aired

And we should hope that ratings stay high after the Glazer fiasco.

By the way, did anyone play the Millionaire Live game after the show?

I’ve been playing every week. Haven’t won anything yet, but it’s a fun way to interact with the show!

I’ve played it all three times so far but nothing. 20 questions correctly in a row is very hard.

Double Post It really isn’t fair especially since they say that celebrities are guaranteed $32,000. Yet back in the Regis era, Gene Simmons missed his $16,000 question. We do know the charity he played for didn’t get $1,000 as that’s the milestone he fell back down too. His charity probably got the $32,000 anyway even though he flunked our early. See 8:46 and later in this clip to see for yourself. It’s hard to tell if Regis said if Genes charity got the $32,000 or not.

Alright, more than 24 hours have elapsed, and I’m not going to hold anything back.
Nikki Glaser is my least favorite contestant in Millionaire history on any rendition of the show. I even like her less than I like the Ingrams. I don’t care about some date that you had, or a second date, and you rambling on and on about it during a $125,000 or $250,000 question. Talk out the answers, think about the question. There’s a time and a place for the host to interact with the contestant for a bit not related to the game, but that wasn’t it.
I mean, is it any wonder ratings were down for the second week in a row? The debacle last week didn’t help, and this certainly didn’t either. It got to a point that Nikki Glaser made me want to change the channel on my favorite game show of all time that I’ve waited to return to Primetime for so many years that I eventually gave up hope it wouldn’t happen. How do you go through 20 minutes of an hour long episode asking only two questions? What kind of pacing is that? We know Joe Trela took a long time on his million dollar question, as did Kati Knudsen on some of her questions. ABC edited those down.
I’ll never root for a celebrity to miss a question and lose money for charity, but when Nikki announced she was walking, I felt a great deal of ecstasy, relief, that that was the end. Nikki Glaser, please never grace your presence on my TV ever again.
Somebody on Twitter noted Jane Fonda was a breath of fresh air, and I have to agree. She was direct and to the point in answering her questions, no super long stories or wasting time. I’ll admit, I did cringe when she kept wanting to use her help after the $32,000 level and she hadn’t brought him back for a lifeline, but that offense still wasn’t as egregious as the quality of them of the contestant that preceded her. I thought she had a decent stack. Most of them I got right. The $125,000 and $250,000 questions stumped me both times.
Finally, Anthony Anderson, who looks to be rather knowledgeable so far. He is a bit loud, but he has a ways to go to surpass Nikki Glaser levels of annoying.
I’ll be watching on Thursday. Please let the ratings be high enough for a civilian edition to commence. I’ve been devoting so much of my time studying by playing quizzes online and watching movies and documentaries on YouTube. It’s a dream of mine to appear in the hot seat. After being too young to appear on the 2009 10th Anniversary special, not qualifying after the online test for Jeopardy and not receiving an invite to try out for Sports Jeopardy, a show I think I could’ve done very well on, I hope I finally get to appear on a quiz show like I’ve always wanted.
I’ll keep watching on my end every week. Hopefully a new day and time slot helps.
