I feel like, it doesn't actually get much darker as questions get harder. A lot of the lights on the bottom half of the stage would still be lit up even at the 1,000,000 question. The set being ever darker at higher tier question would bring so much more tension.

Yeah, about the contestant part, not a single version has 10 contestants anymore. Only Germany sometimes airs a 3 hour episode with 10 contestants (once every 2 or three months). The reason why they cut it down to 6, is that the contestants have a higher chance of potentially getting into the hot seat.
