We lost Alex Trebek today at age 80. He is an American game show icon who will always symbolize the pursuit of knowledge. He was both serous and witty simultaneously, a magical blend that made him the perfect host of Jeopardy! and a true television legend.
2020 has been brutal for game show fans. Losing Regis and Alex within months of each other is so tragic.

Losing two beloved hosts in the game show world is as tragic as losing 1.2 million lives.

I grew up watching and learning from Alex and Regis. I am saddened by this news.

Indeed, he was one of the greatest game show hosts who ever lived. Nobody can truly fill his shoes, and even though Art Fleming was the host before him, Alex truly made Jeopardy! his own. May he rest in peace...

It's a really sad news. Even if I'm French, I watched a lot of Jeopardy!, especially in the last years, and for me, Alex is a model of what a game show host should be : serious in his work to be easygoing in the air, interested in all sides of knowledge (pop-culture, science, arts, history...) and above all, someone who valorize the contestants in their passions, culture, in what they are in general. He managed to transform a simple "answer-and-question-quiz show" into something really popular, in the right meaning : the audiences figures for "The Greatest of All Time" tournament, in January, seems to me a good example.

We have an update on the show. The show will use guest hosts for the time being. Ken Jennings will be the first of those. Alex’s last week has been pushed back to the week of January 4; two weeks of episodes from his 36 years of hosting will air over the holidays. The show will re-enter production on November 30, and the first new episode without Alex will air on January 11.
Even if the new host will never be Alex (which, let’s face it, who can?), he would want us to enjoy the show for the future.

That’s huge news for Jennings. It’s as much of an audition as it is a necessity to forge forward and tape new episodes. Plus, he carries a lot of goodwill with fans of the show to help make those first post-Trebek episodes a little easier. Best of luck to Ken.

I only care about a new host so long as they can at least be serviceable. As we established, no one can truly replace Alex, but he would want us to enjoy the new host for years to come.
