So, as you know, the UK is back in lockdown (and schools have been shut, this time), which means that I have once more been balancing schoolwork with designing. And, it's been quite a productive start to the year - I converted a project I have about The X Factor to PowerPoint, and then, to the forum comes this new design, based on a 3D render of wwtbamfangamer and JustMarcha. The copyright of the reference photo I used goes to them, because, again, I don't want to get slapped wrists for not crediting people!
Looking at this set, compared with my previous works, I feel that this has a lot more... shall we say, gravitas, than the previous ones made last year? But anyways, I best talk about my set before I go into a tangent about praising myself...
So, the first thing you will notice is a broad similarity to the UK set from 2001-2010 - from the grinded metal pattern on the walls (where you'd expect the audience to be) to the... wait. You may ask yourselves "what's a video floor doing here?". Well, it's one of my additions to this set, which you can see is a very different design to the Potion Pictures design, or even Olga's. If anyone's confused, this is actually the colours of my own custom logo, which I will also share with you here:
FiMoKu kindly made me a fusion of the original WWTBAM background with the Olga background, so credit goes to him. This logo of mine is very much inspired by the print version of the 1998-2004 logo (all of which I recoloured myself). I think I was inspired by Marcha's idea of the classic Netherlands logo being used in the OVDB style, but then again, any similarity is purely coincidental.
Going back to the set, the lighting rig is based on the Turkish set, although I did have a bit of a creative headache at first on what to do with it, as with the audience spaces. In the end, I went with the thoughts of "Design what you feel comfortable with doing", and placed display screens in the audience places. Not everyone is an expert with everything...
Fastest Finger First time! This time, I didn't want to filter the video floor with the preset colours on PPT - so, I instead changed up the colours on the actual video floor, using the presentation FiMo kindly sent to me last year, when I was making a private design for myself, which I haven't shared on the forum, because... well, I decided not to! 😂
This filtering will be prominent throughout the set, and also gives an air of realism that I feel was lacking beforehand - not in the least because I enjoyed recolouring every asset of the video floor, even the background (although, using Ezgif... it's better than Microsoft, and I used it for another project that is related to the original version of US supernatural drama "Charmed"!)
The set with every podium installed, including the Dutch-based base for the monitors. You may notice that the chairs seem slightly... odd. Well, all the chairs, my own model of the famous Pietranera Arco, were remade completely from scratch! I did use a reference photo to make them, but in the end, I am pretty happy with the results of them...
A more close-up look at the chairs, especially for you! (No Kylie reference intended)
The difference between the chairs is that the ones with cream armrests (a la the UK) is used for the host and contestant, and the ones with transparent armrests (a la Croatia) are for the FFF hopefuls. Everything right down to the base was constructed by me - but all the textures were found on Google Images, which saved FiMo from making different textures!
The lighting for Tier 1. The colour scheme was roughly inspired by Australia's Special Editions, following the colours of the video floor. Here, you can see a difference in the colouring of the four-leaf clover: instead of using the Radial gradient tools, I switched to Path, which I honestly think looks really quite good for making everything seem metallic...
The lighting to signify the first milestone's win. Nothing much, bar a change of background in the display screens... I felt that gold was appropriate for someone who has just won a sum of money, although I might think about changing some things up to make it more obvious...
The lighting for Tier 2. Here, I start to deviate from the Olga colour scheme, choosing darker blues for the overall theme. The one gripe I have about this and the next tier is that I'm unable to darken the FFF chairs all at once, because I grouped them to save me having to manually change their brightness one at a time.
The lighting to signify the second milestone. Again, only a change of background for the screens, although thinking about it now, it should be more obvious, in the video floor and the colour scheme of the columns/stairs...
The lighting for Tier 3. This is where the deviation is shown in full light, even despite being based on UK 2011-14's lighting scheme. This is my personal favorite slide, not in the least because I think it really amps up the tension for the contestant - everything's blotted out, so it's just them, their monitor, and the host in front of them. However, this is where my gripe about the FFF chairs comes into further light... it's mainly the armrests that irritate me, I feel, for the right-hand side chairs.
Finally, the lighting to signify a winner - this is what everyone seeks to do: give the confetti people a chance to start the swirl fan, held in the gantry, and let the shiny strips fall down, whilst a light show of varying colours ensue. The columns, stairs and rig stay the same generic colour, but it's everything else that changes. This is also the only time that the video floor just about reminds people of the original colour scheme of the Olga logo - mainly because of the golden four-leaf clover.
So, that's that! All in all, this set took me about two to three days to make, owing to the confusion over what to do with the rig and audience stands, but I managed to get it done, and that's what I am proud of. I hope you all like it - comments and feedback are appreciated, as per usual!
