He's right - you're letting us plunder those things. What's the Jailbreak, anyway?

FrankT Jailbreak is a process in which the iPhone/iPod touch software is modified for open use. It gives you access to the system files that you normally wouldn't get access to. That means you can get themes, cracked IPA apps etc. Not a good thing for the new iTouches and the iPhone 3GS though.........

But, if you jailbreak your iPhone / iPod Touch, it's not guaranteed anymore. So, be carful !

FrankT, basically, when the iPhone/iPod Touch come from the factory, their firmware will only allow an app to be installed and run under these conditions: 1. It is digitally signed by Apple (to ensure it went through the Application approval process) 2. All associated Apple FairPlay DRM licensing is valid for the user of said iPhone/iPod Touch. This prevents the sharing of the .ipa application files. When people "Jailbreak", they take advantage of an exploit that really can't be fixed, and install a custom firmware on the device that in essence removes every restriction from the device, so people can login via SSH connections, install any app they want including homebrew, or run pirated apps, just to name a few uses. The act of jailbreaking itself is being disputed as to whether or not it is copyright infringement in the U.S. because the U.S. DMCA places restrictions around the reverse-engineering of copyrighted software, and people use a hacked, reverse-engineered version of the firmware to hack the devices. I personally have nothing against Jailbreaking itself (I'd never do it to my own iPod because it automatically voids warranty and it becomes harder to update it with iTunes, etc). But because I'm a software developer, I am very much against software piracy. End of lecture.

Just one correction : it's not "harder" to update, it's just that if you update to the latest version, it may not be already jailbreaked and as the updates goes, it's more and more difficult to use the exploits since they're just fixing them.
Beside that, leimeisei greatly explained the thing (...we should maybe have explained from the beginning)
