He was the man of Millionaire for the U.S. If it wasn't for Davies the show wouldn't be where it is today. I don't know, I haven't heard anything about it, are you aware of when this happened?

I think we all know how instrumental Michael Davies was to bringing the magic of "Millionaire" to the U.S. More importantly, he kept that original vision alive for quite some time, even as the game changed. For example, it seems he was the main reason that Matthew Strachan was composing music for the U.S. version of WWTBAM long after other countries stopped using his compositions.
I don't think Mr. Davies was fired from "Millionaire." I think he decided to leave the show. Whether or not his leaving triggered the format change or the format change triggered his leaving... well, I don't think anyone except Michael Davies knows that.

Just to clarify what Regisfan has said: as far as I'm aware of, Matthew Strachan was the man who made the 2007 rave-remix (that is, intro, in/out of commercial stingers/Ł1,000 and Ł50,000 win music etc.) where Ramon Covalo only composed the tension beds for each question. That would mean that other countries didn't stop using his compositions, but just switched to the newer set. Sorry for off-topic, but I felt a need to mention that.

But why would they switch the music to the new-raving music? That new one has insignificant drama in it while the old music has the real drama of whether you get it right or wrong.

That was possibly triggered by 2waytraffic taking over Celador - they decided to "refresh" the format and so introduced new music, graphics and the "fast track" thing.
