Welcome to Backstab!
Trust is not easily gained, but much more easily broken. In Backstab, a team of five contestants work together to accumulate as much money as possible in the mutual prize pool... but in the end, only two of them will have the chance to walk away with any money at all! At which point does the lust for money outweigh the benefits of cooperation? Who will find the dagger in their back and their pockets empty, and who will be wielding it? In Backstab, the only thing you can truly trust is your own wits.
Rules
Every game is played with 5 contestants. All of them initially work together to add to (or subtract from) a mutual prize pool, which they all have a chance of winning a share of. However, one by one, they will try to eliminate each other in order to make it into the final round, as trust is broken, daggers are drawn and blood is spilled.
Round 1: Build Round
In the first round, all five contestants will, one by one, be asked a total of 5 questions on a timer of 60 seconds. Each correct answer will add $10,000 to their round score, while each incorrect answer and each one they don't get to will subtract $10,000. At the end of their round, the contestant's score will be added to the prize pool... which means that in the case of a negative round score, they will actually remove money from the prize pool, which will not gain them the favor of their temporary teammates!
The prize pool starts out at $50,000 and can not drop below $10,000. As such, after every contestant has played their Build, there is always a minimum of $10,000 in the initial prize pool.
Once The Build has been played, the game proceeds to Round 2.
Round 2: Pool Round
Contestants take turns to decide between two choices: Play, or Betray.
Should they choose to Play, they may bet any amount - in steps of $5,000, and with an initial minimum bet of $10,000 - from the current prize pool to play for, and will then be asked a multiple choice question with four possible answers. If they answer correctly, their bet is doubled and added back to the prize pool; if they answer incorrectly, their bet is lost completely. The difficulty of the question will adjust based on the amount of money the contestant chose to bet.
Should they choose to Betray, they may select one of the other players, who will then both be asked the same multiple choice question. Both players will answer in secret. Should one of them get it right and the other get it wrong, the player who got it wrong will immediately be eliminated from the game and leave with nothing. If both players get it right, or both get it wrong, another question is asked. If there isn't a clear winner after three questions, the betrayal is considered failed, and the player who initiated it is eliminated from the game.
In order to incentivize players to eventually betray each other, the minimum bet will be increased by $10,000 after every question (and the difficulty thereof will scale accordingly). Once a betrayal has been committed, regardless of its result, the minimum bet is reset back to $10,000.
Once again, the prize pool may not drop below $10,000 during this round.
Once all but two contestants have been eliminated, the game proceeds to Round 3.
Round 3: Traitor's Dilemma
Both players will be playing three rounds of Traitor's Dilemma against each other. At the start of the round, the total prize pool is cut into thirds, and one third will be assigned to one round each. The players must now choose whether to Trust or Betray their opponent.
- If both players trust each other, they will both receive half of the money assigned to that round.
- If one player trusts and one player betrays, the traitor will receive all of the money assigned to that round, while the trusting player receives nothing.
- If both players betray each other, both players will receive 10% of the money assigned to that round.
The players' choices for all three rounds have to be given in secret all at once; i.e. both players must submit three actions at the same time, one for each round. After both players have submitted their actions, the rounds are resolved according to the rules above.
Once all rounds have been resolved, the game moves on to the fourth and final round.
Round 4: The Final Betrayal
Once more, the players will have to choose whether to Trust or Betray each other.
- If both players trust each other, each one will leave with the money they have won up to that point.
- If one player trusts and one player betrays, the traitor will steal all of their opponent's money, and the trusting player will leave with nothing.
- If both players betray each other, both players will leave with nothing.
And that's basically it!
Now, as you may have noticed, this is an RPG. I'm eager to put this concept into practice and play a round of Forum Backstab with members from this very community. As such, if you'd like to give it a shot, don't hesitate to sign up!
The first round will be played by all contestants at the same time. To do so, I'll send each player a link via PM which will ask them their 5 questions on a 60 second timer. The results will be sent to my server, which I will then announce and use in the game itself.
I'll need 5 contestants, so there are 5 spots to fill!
