They did so many “specials” in those final few years that I didn’t even realize they did one with Olympic champions. In hindsight, it screams desperation.

One thing about the intro around this time, they really seemed to not give a damn about the "Last Time" recaps. The recap at the beginning of the 11/1/00 episode only featured the current contestant winning Fastest Finger, even though the previous episode had a $125,000 winner . No mention of him.

I can understand them cutting that out if that gives them more time to show stuff from the episode that's starting. Those openings are usually some of the last things put together after they see how much time they have to work with based on how much the want to show from that day's taping.

The recaps were really excessive until the refresh about halfway through the show’s run. As the show went on, they focused more on the returning contestant than all of the winners from the previous episode.
Also, to amend my post above… we are back to using the interim theme song. The final theme song was used for the Olympics specials and then shelved. I wonder if it was originally intended to be used only for special episodes at first.

The second celebrity special is airing this week, which means Norm McDonald soon.
I can’t say I like the pacing of these celebrity specials. I certainly cringed when Tiffany Haddish, and especially Nikki Glazer, were on with Jimmy. I also can’t say I’m too amused when watching Celebrity Jeopardy.
The pacing is much better with civilians, and often more entertaining.

If they kept doing it at that rate, one every six months or so, it wouldn't have been so bad.

I agree completely. The first two celebrity weeks were genuinely hilarious and featured some big stars. After that, though, they did too many specials and never quite achieved the right mix of personalities again. They began to drag the show down instead of being an asset. Kimmel’s celebrity shows never got off on the right footing. The pandemic is partially to blame, as were the celebrities selected and Jimmy’s ability to wrangle them. It’s sad that Kimmel only got to host opposite a handful of civilians because he was much better at building tension when the stakes were real. Back to the reruns, though. I wonder why GSN opted to skip the first celebrity week but aired this one. I thought they may have skipped the first week to avoid paying appearance fees/residuals to some celebrities, but they featured Kermit today and he’s probably the most expensive of the bunch!

Norm’s episode aired today. I’d forgotten what great television it was. Norm was so funny and was truly a great contestant. It’s a shame Regis talked him out of answering the million dollar question, but I certainly see why Regis was as anxious as he was!

Norm and Regis had earlier discussed the fact that Norm was a compulsive gambler, so Regis really felt like Norm was just rolling the dice for a million dollars. If Norm had talked out his thought process more, mentioning that he remembered seeing it on "60 Minutes," maybe Regis would have backed off.

I for one will never understand how anyone thought the dollar signs in the 2000 logo were an improvement over the old ones.

The December 6th episode aired yesterday, featuring both Jim Matthews' $500,000 win and the first Fastest Finger Fail in the US show's history. It took over a year for the first one to happen, only for it to happen again the very next day.

Regis seemed genuinely shocked when it happened the second time. The odds of that happening twice in such close proximity must be astronomical.
